The Visit

I meant to call on a friend today
But I was distracted on my way
I'm feeling as guilty as I can be
Because, you see, she depends on me

I know she's lonely, (she's all alone)
She sits and waits by the telephone
She misses her family very much
But I guess they're too busy to keep in touch

The nursing home's depressing, I know
(She really didn't want to go)
But I see her fading, bit by bit
As she tries to make the best of it

Her life, once filled with happiness
Has turned to bitter lonliness
Once, there was love to spare
Now, it seems, there's no one to care

I often remind her, she's not alone
Even though she's on her own
Our Lord is standing by her side
Just trust in him, he'll be your guide

Tomorrow I'll visit and hold her hand
And tell her I truly understand
I hope when I leave, I'll hear her say
"Thanks, my dear, you've brightened my day!"
