Patches of Memories
Each square is host to a multitude of memories,
Individual yet joined together...much like a family.
Every one is unique in color and touch,
And all lived many 'lives' before finally being cut up.
Different patterns and colors went into the rag box,
Then were cut into squares, finally to be stitched
Into a 'family of sorts' with hands of loving care.
Years have come and years have gone,
Since stitches joined those patches into 'one', and 'well'
It has served through generations in keeping the family warm.
But surpassing practicality, it has given so much more,
Memory upon memory are forever stiched together
Into beautiful, comforting lore,
'Remember when', or 'way back then', or 'that was Granpa's shirt',
Will forever be the start of a story about a bunch of rags
Sewn into a quilt called a 'patchwork'.
A collection of rags, to some it may seem, but a warm, tangible
'Family tree' is the patchwork quilt to me...
