Lightning Bugs

Grampa and Katie sat out on the porch
Under the moon lit stars
While Billy was catching lightning bugs
And putting them into glass jars

Katie looked at the face of her grampa
When she saw a tear fall from his eye
She knew he was longing for grandma
As he silently searched the night sky

God had seen fit to take grandma home
After giving them seventy years
Katie just wished she knew what to do
To help wipe away grampa's tears

Billy brought Katie a jar full of bugs
And said, Katie this one is for you
Light from the jar captured grampa's sad eyes
As Katie then knew what to do

Grampa remember when grandma was sick
How you prayed all her pain would stop?
Now look at this jar of lightning bugs
And watch as I take off the top

Grampa quietly watched as a halo of light
Ascended as they were released
That's grandma in wings of delight, Katie said
And all of her pain now has ceased

Katie looked at the face of her grampa
Where she saw the first hint of a smile
As she thanked God for a jar of lightning bugs
To bring grampa through one more trial
