I Wanna Go Back

I wanna go back
To how things used to be
Before everything changed
With modern technology.

When mom's were at home
For the kids after school,
And every kid knew
All the words to the Golden Rule.

When kids came home from school
And went outside to play
Instead of lying in bed
Watching video's the rest of the day.

When real food was being cooked,
And ovens smelled great
Instead of "quickie warm ups"
In microwaves on plates.

When kids had to walk
To get to where they wanted to go,
And not everyone at age 16
Had a new car to show.

When we used to play outside,
And get physical exercise
Instead of computer screens
That might one day hurt our eyes.

When the telephone rang,
And the phone was at home
Not hanging from everyone's pocket
Even if no charged to "roam."

When grandmas and grandkids
Had special time together,
And you enjoyed all you heard
Even if it was talk about the weather.

When drugs were not heard of,
And no one was getting "high."
When parents said NO and meant it,
And there was no questioning them why.

When parents cared where there kids were
And knew what time they were in bed,
Instead of waiting up till all hours
Hoping a call came in they dread.

When this country had men and women
That were not like some wimps of today.
When a parent stood for honor
Unlike so much I see today.

When kids left for school
With a good breakfast in their belly,
And sack lunches were great
Even if it was peanut butter and jelly.

When our streets were much safer,
And our doors could be left unlocked.
And you didn't have to watch the neighbors
At the end of the block.

When television had good shows
That taught us nice things about life,
Instead of sex and dope
And sleeping with the neighbor's wife.

When kids didn't back talk
Like so many today do.
When parents had control
Over me and you.

No wonder we're in trouble
With the way things are today.
We've lost the meaning of family,
Which what once was the American Way.
