A Short Talk With My Son

As I went out in the dark this morning
To start the daily chores
I thought I saw you standing there
Beside the milk barn doors

I thought I saw you smile at me
And heard you say good morning Dad
Just thought I would get the milking started
Because I knew were feeling bad

Those cows in the close up pen
Both had their calves last night
And yes I am happy here in my new home
But are you and Mom both all right?

I would have liked to say good bye
Before I left that day
But I had no idea that car
would be there in my way

It all happened so quickly Dad
That I didn't even know
That my earthly life was over
Until I saw you and Mom at my graveside
Crying there below

Please tell my children that I love them
And wish more time we could have had
Ask them as they move through life
To think kindly of their Dad

Yes Norman is here with me
And I saw your folks today
They all told me if I could to tell you
Don't let earthly cares get in your way

But to live life to it's fullest
And we will help you if we can
And that the love one has for others
Is the true measure of a man

And then you said good bye Dad
Maybe we can talk more later on
And as the sun pushed back the darkness
I knew my Son was gone
